Screw Expanders Increase Output and Decrease the Cost of Geothermal Binary Power Plant Systems

چکیده
A study has been carried out on the feasibility of using screw expanders, as an alternative to turbines, in three types of binary systems, suitable for recovering power from liquid dominated brines. The maximum power that one machine can generate is of the order of 1-3 MW per unit, depending on the type of system, and the brine and cooling conditions. They are shown to be roughly as efficient as turbines, when expanding dry vapour, and they can be coupled directly to a generator, without an intermediate gearbox. They have similar characteristics as two-phase expanders, when their efficiencies are not much reduced. This latter feature enables improvements to be made in the conversion of heat to power, of the order of 30% over conventional ORC systems, from brines in the 100 – 140C temperature range. The costs of these machines are very competitive and it is shown that in a cycle designed for power recovery from brines in the 170210C range, the cost per unit output of the first expander stage may be less than 50% of that of a radial inflow turbine-generator set.

Power Recovery from Low Cost Two-phase Expanders
It is well known that power recovery from liquid geothermal brines could be considerably increased by means of efficient two-phase expanders. Hitherto proposals for them have not been economically viable either due to the low adiabatic efficiencies of the expanders or their relatively high manufacturing cost. It has already been reported how, as a result of a long term research and development ...
متن کاملCost Effective Small Scale Orc Systems for Power Recovery from Low Grade Heat Sources
The growing need to recover power from low grade heat sources, has led to a review of the possibilities for producing systems for cost effective power production at outputs as little as 20-50kWe. It is shown that by utilizing the full potential of screw expanders instead of turbines, it is possible to produce Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems at these outputs, which can be installed for a cos...

Iran’s environmental condition is critical, since it is experiencing desertification, unsustainable development and overpopulation. The objective of this study is power source replacement in natural gas stations that operate with natural gas compressors, through using electrical motors, which can be fed by a 160 MW geothermal power plant, as an alternative to gas turbines. Application of such a...

This paper proposes an approach for improving the plant efficiency by reducing the heat rejection temperature of power cycle using Kalina Cycle System 11 (KCS11) which is integrated at the steam condenser of a 500 MWe SubC (subcritical) coal-fired power plant. It is modelled by using power plant simulation software ‘Cycle Tempo’ at different plant operating conditions. Results show t...

In this paper, a novel integrated system is proposed to improve the performance of a conventional low-grade geothermal-based organic Rankine cycle (ORC). The main idea is to utilize two TEG units to recover the waste heat of the condenser and geothermal brine. The proposed model is investigated and compared with simple ORC from the energy, exergy, and exergoeconomic viewpoints through the param...
